Suvarnabhumi Expansion Approved

Airports of Thailand (AoT) has approved a $2.2 billion (Baht 78 billion) expansion for Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport which will add a third runway and a midfield terminal. Originally it had been planned that this phase of the airport’s development would begin immediately after the facility opened in September 2006; but it was subsequently delayed. Once completed, the airport’s capacity will increase by 33% allowing it to handle 60 million passengers a year. AoT is to put the work out to tender in 2009 with construction due to commence before the end of the year.
