Sukhumi Investment

The recently-established independent Russian state of Abkhazia plans to invest significant funds in the aviation business as it seeks to become an alternative gateway to the 2014 Winter Olympics in nearby Sochi. The former Georgian enclave has already given the go-ahead for renovation of its largest airport in its capital, Sukhumi, and is considering establishing its own national airline by early 2009.
Abkhazia and its neighbour South Ossetia were recognised as independent states by the Russian Federation earlier this year, although so far no other country has acknowledged their existence. This would mean any flight from the country would be in breach of ICAO legislation and would represent a significant stumbling-block in plans to establish connections to Krasnador, Moscow and Rostov-on-Don.
