Pan American Starts Again

Pan American World Airways (PAWA) Dominicana is seeking regulatory approval to link Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic with Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida. The new carrier plans to use a mix of 19-seat BAe Systems Jetstream 31 turboprops and 100-seat McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32s.
It faces competition from other carriers, however. Spirit Airlines plans to link Fort Lauderdale with Santiago starting in June and currently flies from its Florida hub to Santo Domingo using Airbus A319s. American Airlines operates between Miami and Santo Domingo, Puerto Planta and Punta Cana. In addition, LAN Airlines and LAN Argentina connect Miami and Punta Cana, using Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
