Russian Freight carrier Polet Airlines has selected Munich Airport in Germany as its primary European base as it expands into the scheduled air cargo market. The Voronezh-based company has made its name in the heavyweight and over-size markets as one of only a few operators of the giant Antonov An-124. Following the arrival of its first Ilyushin Il-96-400T, the airline now plans to offer services between Asia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Europe via Russia and has confirmed Munich as its principal European gateway. These flights are likely to begin in July or August once Polet, the launch customer for the Il-96-400T, receives two further aircraft. Until then the airline’s sole model will be used on support work for the VASO production facility in its home city. Three further IL-96-400Ts are due to follow during 2010.
