An-225 Sets Record Cargo Lift

The largest commercial freight aircraft in the world, the Antonov An-225, has entered the record books having flown a 53ft (16.23m) by 14ft (4.27m) generator from Germany to Armenia, the heaviest load to be transported by air.  The sole example of the type, painted in a revised livery highlighting its Ukrainian origins, is operated by Kiev-based Antonov Airlines.
Having recently undergone a major overhaul, the six-engined jet was positioned to Frankfurt/Hahn Airport on August 11 to collect the giant cargo.  The generator had already been transported from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Longuich on the Moselle River where it was transferred by road for the remainder of its journey to the German airport.
The generator weighed 187.6 tonnes but when you take into account the loading frame, the weight was increased to 189.98 tonnes.  The aircraft departed Frankfurt/Hahn at 10:38pm on August 11, arriving in Yerevan the following morning.  This was the fifth in a series of six flights to transport the generator to the Armenian gas power plant.  The four earlier charters had used smaller An-124 freighters, with the final service also being operated by the giant An-225, which immediately returned to Germany after the landmark flight to collect a transformer.  (Rainer Bexten)
