December 7: Air China confirmed that it has taken a controlling interest in Air Macau through a capital injection plan first announced on June 1.
According to the press release, in recent years Air Macau has suffered operating losses with the situation worsening in 2008, mainly due to the global financial crisis and the implementation of direct chartered flights across the Taiwan Strait. However, with the construction of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, Macau’s airport is expected to play a major role in the growth of the region.
Through the capital injection of approximately HK$154 million ($20 million), Air China’s shareholding in Air Macau rises from 51% to just under 81%.
