American Closes Maintenance Base

AMERICAN AIRLINES is to close its Kansas City, Missouri, maintenance base in September 2010 with the loss of around 700 maintenance and engineering jobs.  It acquired the large maintenance facility in 2001 as part of its purchase of Trans World Airlines.  American has said the closure is a natural consequence of its shrinking fleet, which has dropped from more than 900 aircraft after the TWA takeover, to around 600 in service today.
