January 6: In the aftermath of the attempted bombing of a Delta Airlines jet on Christmas Day, the UK Secretary of State for Transport, Andrew Adonis, said to Parliament that “the first full-body scanners will be operational at Heathrow within a matter of weeks.” He also indicated that the rest of the country’s airports would follow in due course.
Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary, also added that all UK airports will be required to introduce explosive trace detection equipment by the end of the year, with a code of practice instigated to deal with the operational and privacy issues involved. Airport security staff are to be instructed in behavioural analysis techniques, which should help spot passengers acting oddly and target them for additional searches.
