March 19: Air France will celebrate 40 years of operating Boeing’s 747 ‘Jumbo Jet’ on March 20. On that day in 1970 the airline took delivery of its first aircraft, F-BPVA at Boeing’s Seattle plant, flying the aircraft back to Orly Airport at Paris a few days later. It was one of the first airlines outside the USA to operate the aircraft.
F-BPVA even became a movie star – in 1976 it appeared in the film ‘La Bonne année’ painted in Alitalia livery. It served with the airline until retirement in 1992.
Today Air France operates 13 Boeing 747-400s on its transatlantic routes.
