May 10: The two Caribbean airlines are set to merge after an agreement was reached on May 1 to absorb Air Jamaica into Caribbean Airlines’ operations.
The transition phase will take place over the next 12 months to form one Caribbean airline better able to compete in the difficult world economic climate.
According to ATW News, Caribbean has agreed to take on Air Jamaica’s 1,000 employees and its aircraft. Air Jamaica Chairman Denis Lalor said “We believe this transaction creates a unique, historic opportunity to create a true Caribbean air carrier, leveraging the expertise and strengths built up by Air Jamaica and Caribbean Airlines to be able to compete in a fierce global market environment.” Air Jamaica’s fleet consists of six Airbus A320 family aircraft.
