Al Maktoum To Open In June

THE FIRST section of Al Maktoum International Airport at Jebel Ali in the UAE is to open as a cargo terminal on June 27 with an initial capacity of 250,000 tonnes a year and this will progressively increase to 600,000 tonnes.  The Emirate of Dubai is expanding its airport capacity and is spending $33 billion on the new facility on expectations its existing hub Dubai International won’t be able to cope with the anticipated increased demand.  It handled 40.9 million passengers in 2009 and is being expanded to accommodate 75 million by 2012.
“We need an area that doesn’t have the same constraints as now,” said Andrew Walsh, vice-president for cargo and logistics at Dubai World Central, the airport developer, adding that the first passenger terminal will be “substantially complete” in June and will eventually have a capacity of 7 million passengers a year, though no date has yet been set for the start of passenger flights.
