Horizon Air Plans Layoffs

The regional affiliate of the Alaska Air Group, Horizon Air, is laying off 120 employees in the Portland and Seattle area as it cuts its fleet capacity and shuts down three airport bases. Four Bombardier CRJ700 regional jets have already been leased to Atlanta-based Atlantic Southeast Airlines. As a result, the carrier will make 40 flight attendants and 40 mechanics redundant on August 22 and 40 pilots in early November. Horizon will also close its bases at Idaho Falls, Idaho and in Flagstaff and Prescott, Arizona, withdrawing services at the same time.
The airline has been trying to get rid of its 70-seat CRJs since deciding in 2008 to shift its fleet to one aircraft type, the Dash 8-Q400 turboprop, which is more economical to operate on the carrier’s shorter routes. It has eight Q400s on order from the manufacturer, set for delivery in 2012 and 2013.
