Drill in Zimbabwe causes panic

New agencies across the world were caught out today as a safety drill at Zimbabwe’s Harare International Airport was mistaken for a real aircraft accident.
A large plume of smoke and helicopters heading to the scene led reporters to think a crash had happened, backed up by apparent statements from one of the country’s Civil Aviation Authority spokespeople. “I can confirm that a Boeing 767 coming from London has had an accident at Harare airport,” he told AFP news agency.
However it was later confirmed by the UK Foreign Office that it was a drill, and that distressed ‘relatives’ were in fact actors.
