AirAsia claims world sales record for tickets

AirAsia has claimed a world record for air ticket sales with “more than 500,000 seats” sold in 24 hours on August 11.
The Malaysian low-cost carrier says it sold 538,000 seats on the first day of its “Mind Blowing Fare” campaign, which offers a RM1 (€0.25) airfare (excluding taxes) for domestic and international flights. Its previous ‘record’ was 390,000 seats sold in a day last November.
The “Mind Blowing Fare” promotion lasts between August 10 to 15 for travel between 1 April and 11 August 2011. Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia, said “AirAsia’s investment in the ‘New Skies’ booking engine is clearly paying off. It has revolutionised our internet booking. Now, we are able to give guests greater flexibility in booking their flights and the ability to directly manage their bookings.” New Skies, launched by the airline last month, allows up to almost 1 million flight bookings a day.
