New Tower for SFO

SAN FRANCISCO International Airport has signed a contract with the US Government for the construction of a new $80 million ATC tower to be sited between its terminals 1 and 2. The existing tower has been deemed by engineers as unlikely to be able to withstand a strong earthquake – hardly ideal in an area prone to shocks.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will fund and oversee the project while the airport will look after the construction and eventual management of the facility. Work is expected to begin in late 2011 and take up to five years to complete.
