Overflight Fee Increases

THE UNITED States’ FAA has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that will raise fees charged to airlines overflying the US.  They will rise by 14% annually for four consecutive years beginning in the US government’s 2012 fiscal year that starts on October 1, 2011.  The en route overflight fee will reach $56.86 per 100 nautical miles by October 1, 2014, compared to the current figure of $35.69 per 100nm.
The International AIR Transport Association (IATA) estimates that the proposed fee increases would: “slap another $40-50 million on the bill of international carriers” and warned that Canadian airlines operating to the Caribbean will be hit particularly hard by the new fees.
