Shanghai Airlines Joins SkyTeam

THE SKYTEAM ALLIANCE has confirmed that Shanghai Airlines is to become a member of the grouping in tandem with its new parent company, China Eastern Airlines.  The two carriers merged in February 2009 and there has been mounting speculation about what Shanghai Airlines would do since its announcement that it would be leaving Star Alliance on October 31, 2010.  As a result of this decision, both Shanghai-based carries are scheduled to become part of the SkyTeam family in 2011.
Meanwhile, it is also expected that Taipei-based China Airlines will join the alliance during the same period. Between the four Chinese carriers in the group (China Airlines, Shanghai airlines, China Eastern and China Southern) the newly formed alliance looks set to have a significant foothold in the ever-growing Chinese market.
