Southend Update

Construction work has started on the new multi-million pound terminal building at Southend Airport.  The first girders for the structure were lifted into place on January 18. It will have a curved roof and a glass wall to take advantage of natural light.
It is being built opposite the new £12m (US$19.4m) airport railway station and next to the new £3m (US$4.8m) control tower.
Building work is being undertaken by the Buckingham Group and is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 London Olympics when the airport is aiming to handle 2 million passengers during that year.  (Simon Murdoch)
