Fight to Keep City Airport Open

FOLLOWING THE announcement in April that Plymouth Airport was to be closed in December 2010, discussions are continuing between public and private organisations in the Plymouth area to try and find a way of keeping it open – with options ranging from charter services to a council subsidy.  Owner and operator, the Sutton Harbour Group, made the closure decision following a prediction of the facility losing £1 million ($1.6 million) this year.
The possibility of a council subsidy for the airport – as happens at Newquay Cornwall Airport – is understood to be another option which is currently being explored, with South West Devon MP Gary Streeter meeting with businesses based on or near the airport site.  “We can’t afford for a city of our size to be without an airport,” he said.
