SAN DIEGO International Airport celebrated a major milestone in The Green Build project as the final steel beam for its terminal expansion was installed on June 8, 2011.
The completion of the steelwork was celebrated at a ‘topping out’ ceremony which was attended by more than 200 elected officials, Airport Authority Board members, business and community leaders and members of the construction team.
We’re pleased to mark this significant milestone for The Green Build and celebrate the project’s contributions to the local economy,” says Thella F Bowens, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
The Green Build will add 460,000 sq ft (42,735m2) to Terminal 2 and over 5,600 tons of steel were required.  The expansion will include ten new gates, a dual-level roadway, more security lanes, larger waiting areas and more shopping and dining options.  The $1 billion project, set to open in 2013, is being constructed by Turner/PCL/Flatiron and is designed by HNTB.
