Malpensa to Improve Rail Link

Malpensa Airport (MXP), Italy, has revealed a scheme to connect its Terminals 1 and 2 with a rail link.  The plans will be put into motion upon the completion of a study named MXPT2LINK-UP, co-financed by the European Union.

The EU is investing over €1m (US$1.4m) into the study from the 2010 Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency Annual Call, which will allow for the immediate launch of tendering procedures.

MXP is already connected to Italy’s high-speed rail network with trains linking the airport to Milan and the Florence/Bologna section.  However, Terminals 1 and 2 do not have a direct rail link.

The study will deliver the final design of the proposed 2.4 mile (3.8km) connection and a new railway station at Terminal 2.
