Australian Formula One driver and Qantas Ambassador Mark Webber attended a Qantas event in Singapore on September 22, 2011, and shared his ambition of becoming a pilot.
Mr Webber talked about his progress in obtaining a pilot’s licence, his expectations for the Singapore Grand Prix race, and his role as a Qantas ambassador. He also met with Singaporean go-kart race, Jon Lee, who won the title of cadet champion in last year’s Singapore Karting Championship.
In July 2011, Qantas announced its plans to assist Mr Webber in becoming a pilot. Since then, he has spent some time in an A380 cockpit with one of the airline’s training captains at Heathrow Airport.
Mr Webber said: “I’ve always been fascinated by flying and the Qantas simulator experience provided me with a real insight of what it takes to fly.”
Mr Webber hopes to take to the skies after his Formula One career and Qantas will provide support through its training pilots and flight simulators. It will also recommend an approved pilot training organisation.
