Ash Technology by easyJet

NEW ash radar technology has been launched by European low-cost carrier easyJet and Nicarnica Aviation to detect volumes of volcanic ash in the air.  However, Dr Colin Brown, Director of Engineering at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “Such technology will be useful as long as it is rolled out widely.  We need more data.  We also need to improve the techniques we have to measure and detect volcanic ash and hence our knowledge of how it spreads.  It does not improve the tolerance of the aircraft to ash.  It just tells us where not to go.”
