Morpho Detection, Inc (MDI), the explosives and narcotics detection business of Safran group’s security unit Morpho, has received an order from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) for 63 next-generation Itemiser DX desktop explosives trace detection (ETD) systems.
The systems, valued at more than $2 million, will be deployed to Canadian airports to support passenger and baggage screening efforts.
Certified in 2009 by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Itemiser DX utilizes ion trap mobility spectroscopy (ITMS) trace technology to simultaneously analyse both positive and negative ions from a single sample, providing “unparalleled” threat and contraband detection. The lightweight and portable system can quickly and accurately detect a broad range of explosives and narcotics.
Brad Buswell, President and CEO of MDI, commented: “Morpho Detection is pleased [that] CATSA has recognised the operational capabilities of Itemiser DX by placing [its] first order for this industry-leading desktop trace solution.”
…and Certification for UK Cargo
The Itemiser DX system has also been certified for air cargo screening by the UK Department for Transport (DfT). As a result of this recognition, the system is now available at air cargo facilities throughout the UK.
The DfT first certified the system for passenger airport checkpoints and checked baggage screening in 2010. More than 3,000 Itemiser DX units have been sold worldwide since its introduction three years ago.
