First Aircraft Departs from Frankfurt’s Pier A-Plus

On Wednesday October 10 at 09:50 precisely, as scheduled, the first aircraft pushed back from the new Pier A-Plus at Frankfurt Airport, Germany.  The Lufthansa Airbus A380 ‘Zürich’, operating under flight number LH454, carried 466 passengers bound for San Francisco, marking the first of a total of 13 flight departures scheduled for the facility’s first day of operation.
The new terminal area, which will be used exclusively by Lufthansa and its partners, officially opened last week, after almost four years of construction.  With the addition of this new concourse, Frankfurt Airport will be able to handle an additional six million passengers per year.
Many transfer processes at Lufthansa’s main hub are expected to speed up with the new extension.  In future, for example, all flights to the USA will be handled in Area A, and the minimum connection time for flights to and from Europe will reportedly be lowered from 60 to 45 minutes.  In addition, more aircraft will be able to dock directly onto the terminal and will not have to park at remote apron positions, making it more convenient for passengers as they will not have to be transferred to the terminal by bus.
