Transport Minister pledges to accept Davies’ report findings

The Rt Hon Simon Burns MP, the British Government’s Minister of State or Transport, has said that the Conservatives will accept Sir Howard Davies’ recommendations about runway capacity in the south east of England which is due to be published in 2015.

Mr Burns was a speaker at the opening session of the Airport Operators Association
(AOA) conference in London, chaired by journalist and broadcaster Andrew Neil.  Referring to the Davies’ Report Mr Burns said that its findings would need cross-party support if it is to succeed.  Andrew Neil responded by asking, if the Conservatives were still in power when the report is published, would his party accept its findings?  Mr Burns didn’t commit himself at first, but when Mr Neil put the question for the third time; asking
how the Conservatives could expect support across the House when their own party wouldn’t commit itself, the Minister of State simply said “Yes” [the Conservatives will accept the findings of the Davies Report].

Mr Burns also confirmed that the Conservatives’ current policy is that there is no need for any further runways in the south-east of England.
