New Quito International Airport Opens

The new Mariscal Sucre International Airport  (MSIA) in Quito, Ecuador, has officially opened following an inauguration by the country’s President, Rafael Correa.
The last flight from the old airport (of the same name) departed at 19:07 on February 19.  Operational equipment and personnel were moved over the approximately 9 miles (15km) from the old to the new airport during a 14-hour overnight transfer project and the first landing at the new facility took place at 09:07 local time on February 20.
The new MSIA has a 13,451ft (4,100m) runway, the longest in South America.
