Atlanta’s International Terminal Named Best in Design

Gresham, Smith and Partners (GS&P), a multi-disciplinary design and consulting firm has announce that the Maynard H Jackson Jr International Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was named “Best in Design” at the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 2013 Best in Atlanta Real Estate Awards.
GS&P was the architect-of-record for the LEED Gold-certified terminal, which was designed by Atlanta Gateway Designers (AGD), a joint venture between GS&P and the Duckett Design Group.
At the awards ceremony, the terminal was praised for its light and airy spaces, its environmentally-conscious, sustainable focus, and its usage of local and regional materials.
“The new terminal has provided a new front door as an international gateway to the world,” said Al Pramuk, GS&P’s Executive VP of Aviation.  “Our goal was to extend the
underground plane train from Concourse E to this new terminal complex with 12 new international gates and a new customs-immigration clearance to eliminate rechecking bags for arriving passengers to Atlanta.  The Airport now has a 40-gate international complex with a front door and entrance directly from Interstate I-85.  The design features
provide a beautiful and impressive gateway to the US and city of Atlanta.  The design team did a great job of achieving the combination of functional efficiency, sustainability and beauty.”
The terminal design also includes many energy-efficient and water-saving features, such as superior insulation, low-flow plumbing systems, and storm-water cisterns and filtration systems.  The project achieved a 93% waste diversion rate, included 47% recycled content in the building materials, and obtained 45% of construction materials from sources within 500 miles of the site.
