Demolition Commences on Gatwick’s Pier 1

Gate Room - Night

London Gatwick commenced demolition of its second oldest pier, Pier 1, on Friday (May 31), as part of its £1.2 billion (US$1.8bn) transformation.
In partnership with Vinci Construction UK, the new design aims to deliver easier access from the departure lounge and spacious departure gates where passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the airfield.
The airport says the project requires coordination of passenger facilities, airline facilities and a new baggage handling system for the South Terminal.  The baggage project has already upgraded hold baggage screening facilities and transformed the flexibility of the existing system to accommodate features such as self-service bag drop.
The next stage involves delivering a faster system with passenger-friendly loading points for a safer and more efficient system.  A key feature will be an automated baggage storage facility.
