The first phase of a retail renovation at Detroit Metro Airport’s (DTW) McNamara Terminal Concourses A and B is complete with the opening of seven new retail stores. By next spring, an additional 29 units will be available to passengers.
Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) CEO Tom Naughton commented: “Detroit Metro Airport is entirely self-sustaining and does not receive any tax dollars to support airport operations, so our retail programme is an important source of revenue that keeps the airport running. But just as important, a strong retail programme helps make our terminals exciting and fun. This is a great start in re-energising the airport shopping experience for our passengers.”
The first phase retail concepts are: Detroit!, selling popular local products and Detroit-themed memorabilia; Zozo, retailing gifts and home décor; newsstand and travel store, The Wall Street Journal; health and beauty store, The Body Shop; jewellery store PANDORA; CNBC Smartshop, selling a range of popular newsstand items; and Be Relax, a full-service spa and lifestyle centre.
The units are operated by World Duty Free Group, Paradies and Be Relax.
The retail programme is expected to generate $7.7 million in revenue for WCAA in its first full year, and $62 million over the seven year term. All revenues will go towards funding airport operations.
The entire project will take four phases and is scheduled to be complete by next spring, at which point a transformation of the airport’s food and beverage venues will commence.
