As a result of heightened security fears associated with the Sochi Winter Olympics the US Government has banned airline passengers from carrying any liquids in carry-on baggage on direct flights from the US to Russia. The move was announced on Thursday, the day before the Games’ began and, currently, there is no indication if the restriction is just for the duration of the event.
Earlier this week US security services had warned that explosives might be smuggled inside toothpaste tubes on flights to Russia, potentially enabling terrorists to make improvised explosive devices either in flight, or upon arrival.
The Russian authorities had already banned all liquids, pastes and gels from internal flights last month.
Fears about potential terrorist attacks in Russia during the Winter Olympics were heightened by two suicide bombing attacks in Volgograd in December. Islamist militants from the Caucasus region have also made threats.
