They’re seven meters wide and tall, and are now extending a glowing welcome to passengers, visitors and staff at Munich Airport: the big, new LED-lit ‘M’s along the airport’s western and eastern approaches. As an update of the familiar Munich Airport logo, the new M sign serves as both the calling card and trademark of the airport. The photo shows the shining white M logo complemented by a coloured diagonal line (known as the “connector”) that now greets visitors arriving from the west. The connector is synchronized with the three standalone connectors behind it, spaced 47 meters apart, to cycle through the Munich Airport Group’s four colours: blue, violet, orange and green. Another ‘Super Sign’ is positioned along the eastern access road.
Each of the white elements contains 400 brightly glowing LEDs, while the connector is fitted with a tight array made from 6,000 of these high-tech lights. Its control technology allows smooth transitions between the four colours at any time of day or night. The signs themselves are made of steel, wrapped in enamelled sheet metal and white fabric, creating an ideal backdrop for the lighting. To minimise energy use, power consumption of the LEDs is calibrated during daylight and night hours to use only as much power as necessary.
