One of the largest Iranian carriers, Mahan Air, performed the first Tehran-Sochi flight on July 14, launching a regular nonstop service between Iranian capital and Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi. The move follows three successful test flights carried out in March and operates under the Open Skies scheme that is active at Sochi until the summer of 2016.
The first Sochi-bound Airbus 310-300 with 143 passengers onboard arrived at the Sochi International Airport at 2145 on July 14 where it was welcomed with a tradition water cannon salute.
The Open Skies deal, which took effect in Sochi on October 19, 2014, means that any foreign carrier may pick up and drop off passengers and cargo with no restrictions on aircraft types, frequencies, and regardless of interstate agreements.
Mahan Air will perform Tehran-Sochi flights twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday departing Tehran at 2315 and arriving at Sochi at 2145. A third flight will be added in August but all the Tehran-Sochi air services will end on October 23, 2015.
