Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), the operating company of Munich Airport (IATA: MUC) has announced an increase in all traffic segments in the first quarter of 2016. The number of passengers increased by 3% to 8.9million – more than ever before in the first quarter of a calendar year. The 88,350 take-offs and landings represented a year-on-year gain of 1.3%. The 79,300 tons of airfreight handled in the first quarter was 6% more than in the first quarter of 2015.
The gains in total passengers at the Bavarian hub primarily reflects its growth in international traffic. Intercontinental traffic grew by 8% to 1.6million passengers, making it the main driver of the Q1 performance. The airport described routes to the UAE, USA and South Africa as “strong performers.”
More than five million passengers travelled on continental routes in the first three months of the year, representing a rise of almost 3% more than the same period last year. Here, FMG said the demand was especially strong for connections to Spain and the UK. In the domestic segment, traffic was up by about 1% to over 2.2million passengers.
