The devastating fire which has swept across a vast area of Alberta, and severely damaged the town of Fort McMurray, Canada, has forced commercial flights to be suspended at its airport until further notice. Despite this, the Fort McMurray Airport Authority is continuing to operate as a key transportation facility for emergency operations and the transportation of food and supplies for first responders and evacuees.
Media interviews are not currently available but as of 1600 local time on May 5 the airport issued a statement that its main passenger terminal, runways and taxiways were all undamaged. It added that the airport’s maintenance garage received minimal damage; and a number of structures along Snow Eagle Road/Airport Road received varying degrees of damage.
A satellite administration operations centre has been set up in Edmonton, in support of airport operations.
