On Sunday May 15 Lisbon Airport, Portugal (IATA: LIS), will be renamed as Humberto Delgado Airport. The airport’s management company, ANA, says the move comes after a decision by the country’s Council of Ministers aimed at honouring a man who was a noteworthy figure both in 20th-century Portuguese political history and in Portuguese civil aviation. It added: “The decision serves to acknowledge General Humberto Delgado’s unique contribution not only to the fight for freedom and democracy during Estado Novo, but also to the development of modern commercial aviation in Portugal.”
The ceremony to mark the dedication will be attended by the President and Prime Minister of Portugal, along with the Mayor of Lisbon. It will begin with the unveiling of the new official name of the airport on the outer façade of the airport and followed by the unveiling, inside the terminal, of the plaque commemorating the ceremony.
