Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, USA, (IATA: PHX) will close its north runway (Runway 8/26) from Thursday October 6 to Sunday November 6 for several construction and maintenance projects.
The north runway is one of three at PHX so the temporary closure of 08/26 means that all aircraft movements will have to use the two southern runways for the duration of the work. The airport says arrival and departure delays of up to 30 minutes are possible during peak travel times (7:30am – 10am and 5pm – 8pm).
The airport’s management team is asking passengers who have tight connections to contact their airline if they are concerned about having enough time to transfer between flights. Additionally, passengers and those picking up passengers should check flight status with their airline before coming to the airport.
The primary reason for the closure is to run additional power from an electrical substation north of the airport all the way to Terminal 3. Workers will need to remove concrete from the north runway, install a duct bank, and then re-pave that section of runway. This is necessary for the Terminal 3 modernisation project, which is designed to provide a more efficient and consolidated security checkpoint, more space for passengers and state-of-the-art technology systems.
