The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has announced a weekend closure at the intersection of two runways to perform maintenance work.  The activity will occur September 29-30, 2018 at the intersection of Runways 28L and 1R.

Airport teams will work on the structure below the pavement in preparation for holiday traffic and rainy winter weather.

The schedule of runway closures is as follows:

  • Runway 28L will be closed from Saturday, September 29th at 12:01am until Sunday, September 30th at 7:00am
  • Runway 01R will be closed from Saturday, September 29th at 12:01am – 7:00pm

These runway closures are anticipated to affect normal operations, and delays may be likely during this period.  Travelers are encouraged to visit www.flysfo.com or check with their airline for delay information.

“The intersection of our runways is among the most heavily-used surfaces at SFO,” said airport director Ivar C Satero.  “This weekend runway maintenance work will ensure this high-traffic area remains available during our busy holiday travel season and through wet weather conditions. I appreciate the patience and understanding of travelers during this closure.”

SFO has four runways, comprised of two pairs of parallel intersecting runways.  In 2017, SFO made a series of improvements to Runway 28L, installing new long-lasting LED centreline lights and revising taxiways to improve operational efficiency.
