RiverOak MSE Ltd, which hopes to restart operations at the former Manston Airport, has signed a contract to acquire land at the former airfield site. The transaction is expected to be complete by July 11. The company is expected to build a new air freight centre at the airport.

The existing owner of the land, Stone Hill Park, had previously submitted a planning application to build up to 3,700 homes and associated infrastructure.

Manston Airport (IATA: MSE) closed in 2014 with the loss of 144 jobs after its owner, Infratil, sold it to the Stagecoach co-founder Dame Ann Gloag in October 2013 for £1, plus its accrued debts. Plans to close the airport were announced in March 2014 and the last passenger service took place that April, approximately one month before the airport’s doors were closed.
