Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg and the technology company ZECH Bau GmbH celebrated the completion of the building shell of Terminal 2 at BER with the topping out ceremony on July 30. T2 is designed for 6 million passengers per year and will serve both arrivals and departures. It will provide everything from check-in, baggage drop-off and claim to security controls and service facilities through to retail and gastronomy, but access to the aircraft will take place in the Pier Nord departure lounges, which is connected to T2 via two bridges. The building is due to open in October 2020 when BER goes into operation.
Prof Dr-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg said: “The topping out ceremony marks an important first milestone for Terminal T2. It is now crucial that the conditions for the installation of the baggage handling system are accomplished by autumn. When T2 starts operations, we will be increasing the capacity at BER to between 28 to 30 million passengers. Together with Schönefeld Airport, which will become a part of Berlin Brandenburg Airport next year as Terminal 5, more than 40 million passengers will be able to be handled at this location every year. My thanks go to all of the companies, construction workers and authorities involved as well as our employees”.
