Inaugural flights to the new destinations are set to start this week
Celebrations commenced yesterday (Oct 22) as Wizz Air launched its new base at London Gatwick Airport, whilst securing four new routes to Athens, Lanzarote, Malta and Naples.
The London gateway is the airline’s third UK site alongside London Luton and Doncaster Sheffield.
With the introduction of the four new holiday routes, the carrier currently has around 490,000 seats on sale directly from the south London hub.
The company is hoping that those who have missed out on the opportunity to travel in the summer will choose to fly with them because of the new choices of destinations.
Owain Jones, managing director of Wizz Air UK, is thrilled by the new launch: “This opening is further evidence of our commitment to the UK market, as we create local jobs and deliver on our promise of providing affordable, direct flights to exciting destinations.”
According to Wizz, around 30 direct jobs have been created due to the opening, with the opportunity for many more indirect jobs within the area.
Currently, the carrier flies between Sofia, Budapest, Gdansk, Krakow and Bucharest.
Wizz Air says it produced the lowest amount of CO2 emissions among European airlines in 2019 and has been listed as one of the top ten safest carriers in the world.
