Working for one of the world's largest, privately- owned aerospace and defence companies, my client is now looking to recruit a Systems Engineer to be based at their head office in Cambridge.

Delivering innovation and excellence in engineering, support solutions and services in the air, on land and at sea they were established more than 100 years ago, have almost 5,000 employees and an annual turnover of around £2.5bn. They specialise in the conversion, modification, maintenance and support of civil and military aircraft, defence vehicle engineering, shelter manufacture, composite solutions and the provision of personnel, training and advice.

The Systems Engineer will focus on the timeliness and quality of engineering outputs whilst successfully delivering the engineering associated with complex, high-value, low-volume special missions aircraft projects.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Promote and lead the implementation of Systems Engineering across the Engineering function
  • Deploy high standards of technical practice in Systems Engineering
  • Apply best practice systems engineering techniques to support our projects and business development activities
  • Application and development of the Business Management System (BMS) procedures
  • Create a culture of innovation and creativity in the early stages of the system design process from conception through to disposal at its out of service date
  • Focus on engineering performance across the full range of the Systems Engineering lifecycle including timing, quality and productivity
  • Build, lead and manage a strong engineering delivery team on projects; meeting future demands, driving and challenging the team to continually grow and improve
  • Responsive to customer deadlines, external technical trends and developments
  • Set and enforce standards, ensure rigour, resilience and continuous improvement in design solutions, meeting all regulatory requirements, conforming to specifications, quality and certification requirements within schedule and budget
  • Act as a project integrator and interface between project management and other engineering teams
  • Project engineering duties such as package work and team coordination, schedule planning, creation and implementation of systems engineering management plans and project quality plans

About You:

  • Degree educated in Engineering, Maths or Physics
  • Chartered engineer status is beneficial but not essential
  • Qualified Systems Engineer with experience in the Aerospace and Defence industry. Additional experience in other relevant sectors is also advantageous.
  • The ability to apply your skills and knowledge across a wide and diverse range of projects.
  • Highly computer literate
  • A high standard of written and spoken English that will enable you to compile and deliver technical reports and presentations.
  • Customer orientated by building value-added relationships with internal and external customers
  • Previous experience in a role with responsibility for leading conceptual development projects or functions delivering engineering design outputs
  • Experienced in generating and analysing technical requirements and articulating technical arguments to demonstrate compliance with said requirements
  • A sound understanding of a broad range of product development, verification and in-service processes and techniques e.g. product lifecycles, modelling, simulation and analysis, requirements derivation, test, qualification and acceptance planning, execution and reports as well as configuration control
  • Experienced in planning and delivering large and complex tasks to schedule and budget demonstrating effective time management across many projects and priorities
  • Focussed on delivery and improvement of projects including forecasting and time, cost and schedule adherence
  • Sound understanding of product safety and airworthiness environments

You must be eligible to apply for SC clearance and, therefore, must hold a British passport and have lived and worked in the UK for the past 5 years
